• Somner Macdonald Architects have been in practice for more than 20 years and collectively hold more than 70 years professional experience. Our small team is based in Edinburgh and works throughout the UK. With more than 1000 successfully completed domestic and commercial architectural projects in our portfolio, we are experts in our field.  Our experience ranges from restoring, transforming, remodelling and extending Georgian, Victorian and modern properties, to delivering stunning new build homes, and commercial fit-outs. 

    The high quality of our work is frequently recognised in industry awards and editorial publications, including Homes & Interiors Scotland and Grand Designs magazines.  In 2018 the Edinburgh Architectural Association Award shortlisted our Molend project in the Scottish Borders. The Edinburgh Beer Factory, which we designed and coordinated, won 'Best Destination' at the Scottish Beer Awards 2018.  In 2017 we received a national award from the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) for our Moray Place project, which was subsequently shortlisted for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award.

Since graduating from Sheffield in 2011, Jon has worked in renowned practices in Manchester, London and Edinburgh across a diverse range of projects, including delivering award-winning theatre and museum jobs as well as highly-crafted, contemporary housing, education and commercial work.

  • Nigel Somner Somner Macdonald Architects Edinburgh

    Nigel studied at the Oxford School of Architecture. In 1993, he set up his own practice, with Keith Macdonald, working on domestic projects and community schemes for Edinburgh Council. Recently, the focus has been on high end residential projects, for modern living. Nigel lectured at Edinburgh’s College of Art and took part in RIBA's Small Practice Group and RIAS Council.

  • Persefoni Kalatzi Somner Macdonald Architects Edinburgh

    Persefoni is a Part 2 Architectural Assistant with previous experience in residential projects, including off-site timber construction. She has a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Architectural Engineering and a Masters of Science with Distinction in Architectural Technology.

    Persefoni received the Construction Scotland Innovation Centre Scholarship Award and won the Award Medal of the Class in 2016. She also participated in the University's Annual Exhibition with her team project in Mapping, Documentation and Preservation of Residential Complexes in Greece.

  • Sean Gaule Somner Macdonald Architects Edinburgh

    Seán graduated from the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture Aberdeen with distinction. His experience covers commercial, housing and hotel sectors. Seán joined SMA in 2012 and has developed the practice’s BIM capabilities. The results of his collaborative efforts were recognised when the Practice won a RIAS prize for the Moray Place refurbishment project in 2017.

    Tom graduated from Scott Sutherland School of Architecture Aberdeen with distinction. Prior to joining SMA in 2017, he gained a range of experience on domestic, commercial and public projects. Tom has seen numerous renovation and extension projects through to completion. He has a passion for the craft and material of buildings, producing unexpected designs that challenge preconceptions.
