Somner Macdonald Architects is a residential architecture practice based in Edinburgh, with a presence in East Lothian and Perthshire, and projects spanning central and southern Scotland.

Founded in 1993, we bring over three decades of experience designing homes shaped by clarity, care and a deep understanding of place. Our work in both urban and rural settings gives us the confidence to design with purpose and long-term vision.

We specialise in expressive yet restrained architecture, spaces that feel calm, coherent and attuned to modern domestic life. Every project is guided by a rigorous, considered process and built on strong relationships with clients, collaborators and craftspeople.

As a multigenerational practice with specific expertise in homes and domestic life, we are deeply experienced in working with listed buildings, heritage sites and complex planning contexts. Drawing on trusted local knowledge and a well-established network of collaborators, we create bespoke homes that honour the past while supporting contemporary living with craft, precision and lasting value.
