We’ve worked on numerous Victorian houses in this area – remodelling, refurbishing, extending. The clients here wanted to create the usual spacious kitchen-dining-living space, with plenty of light and connection to their secluded and bright back garden.
We combined the rear rooms – it’s a popular intervention. We created a large opening from these rooms, with beautiful Fineline sliding doors. The large glazed panels, minimal frames and sophisticated look have real impact. The offshoot was incorporated into the space, creating a sunroom / snug. The old maid’s room was opening up, so that it forms an open plan mezzanine study. We introduced a neat natural timber stair up to this, with open treads and a simple slatted balustrade.
It adds character and a bit of playfulness. It’s super simple and the whole thing was executed really well by James Moss & his team at Dovetail Contracts. The structural engineer was Robertson & Eadie.
