Kitchen extension to detached Victorian villa
Completed 2009

A new, open-plan kitchen, dining & living space added onto the back of a classic Victorian villa. Two existing offshoots were removed; the original Victorian one and a later addition. The brief was to create a cohesive space which flows from the main house and connects with the garden.

The rear of the house is east facing, opening onto a large garden. The aspect is lovely but the orientation can be limiting. The solution was to create one very large space with doors from the existing hall and family room and with windows and glazing all round. The key to this design is the roof - it is open to the pitch, glazed & supported with elegant steel & oak trusses (care of structural engineer John Watt).

The scheme incorporates a lead roof, natural stone walling and timber windows, doors and screens. The result is solid, light, transparent and cool.
