New Town, Edinburgh

Conservation of Georgian townhouse; remodel & extension
Completed 2009

This property had been altered repeatedly, its use changed and many original features lost in the process. The initial brief was to make subtle changes but, as the building was uncovered, it became apparent that a far more substantial restorative approach was required.

The four floors were put back to a layout which respected the original design but allowed for the addition of modern touches. Simple interventions were introduced to get more natural light to the rear of the house and to take advantage of views to the front.

The existing basement extension to the rear of the property was removed. It was replaced with a very simple structure finished with teak panelling, stainless steel and glass. The roof of the extension forms a bridge to link with the terraced garden. The overall result is classic, simple and timeless. The quality of specialist construction by Laurence McIntosh is premium.
